Library Olympics

In the spirit of the Olympic Games and library week, we held a ‘Library Olympics’ for all student librarians that were interested. Several of the juniors participated in them and almost everyone won a prize ranging from small fun sized chocolates to the new Cherub book “The General”
The competition involved estimating the time it would take to correctly shelve 6 books while wearing thick wool lined gloves before attempting to get as close to your estimated time as possible. Estimations ran from under a minute to 6 - 8 months (Martin who was also quoted asking “Can you like throw the books into the shelves?”).The record for fastest time was set by Betty with a time of 59 seconds and the longest by Bradley at over 2 minutes.

The second competition was wheeling a trolley around an obstacle course. This was judged on originality and one of the prize winners – Bradley, has been quoted saying “What obstacles” in reference to his tactic of collecting said obstacles. Others won prizes for completing the whole obstacle course without hitting a single obstacle – this was considered a clear round and was won by Sharon and for being the most original.

The three medal winners were Valerie in third place, Betty in second and myself in first. However whether you were placed in the top three or you won a small prize, everyone involved enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to unwind from the stress of school life.

Thanks to those who contributed to this great event
- Ms Hancock & Mrs Duke the main organisers and planners
- Mrs Duke the official timer
- Mrs Savage the first of our two official record keepers
- Mrs McKenzie the second of our official record keepers
- Rachel our camera operator and
- All participants who made the games what they were.

Vampire Diaries

This short four book series is an engaging and seductive series that captured my attention with the seemingly basic girl meets boy story line but keeps you attentive through small plot twists and revelation of characters true natures mid-way through the series and books. Smith is a tantalising author who knows how to keep us guessing right to the very end of the book however if you do not like horror this is not the series for you as there are several gruesome scenes throughout the series - as with any vampire romance/horror series in all honesty.
Also there are several short fan fictions that add to the thrill by continuing the story long after the last book. These can be found at: http://www.fanfiction.net/book/L_J_Smith/

Library Week 2008 – What’s Your Story? Nou te kōrero

Library Week 2008 (18 - 24 August) has been running for over 35 years and is a week long celebration of libraries. This year’s theme “What’s Your Story? Nou te kōrero” aims to highlight the individual reasons why people use libraries - be it to hire a DVD, surf the Internet or get involved in a community project.
To celebrate Library Week ‘08 we are launching this blog. Make a comment, tell us what you think or why you use the HHS Library and be in to win. We have plenty of prizes up for grabs,
books,
movies passes,
chocolate
& one ipod shuffle.
Comment now and be in to win. (Only comments following our “code of conduct” will be posted.)
Prizes will be drawn during September - NZ Book Month.

Tomorrow Series By John Marsden

The Tomorrow series is a series of 7 books written by the well-known John Marsden, who is noted for his work on books for older youth. The books are told in first person by the main character, Ellie Linton. They are about Ellie and her friends, who are forced into hiding with only each other when their country, Australia, is invaded by an enemy nation. The first book, Tomorrow, when the war began, is about the discovery of their main hiding place and their adaptation to survival, along with their first real attack on the enemy. The books are realistic and focus on ideas of war devastation, death, and the value of friends. The series is followed by The Ellie Chronicles, featuring the titles While I Live, Incurable and Circle of Flight.

Tomorow Series:

  1. Tomorrow, When the War Began
  2. The Dead of the Night
  3. The Third Day, the Frost
  4. Darkness, be my Friend
  5. Burning for Revenge
  6. The Night is for Hunting
  7. The Other Side of Dawn

Rangers Apprentice: Ruins of Golan

Will is small for his age, but nimble and energetic. All his life, will has longed to be a warrior and to follow in the footsteps of the father he never knew, so he is devastated when he is rejected as an apprentice to Castle Redmont's Battleschool. He's no happier when he's assigned instead to the Ranger Corps, the Kingdom's secret service, as the Rangers are a mysterious group whose uncanny ability to move about unseen is thought by many to be the result of black magic. Will begins training under the mysterious mentor Halt, and reluctantly learns all the fieldcraft and skills he will need to become a fully-fledged Ranger. But Will soon finds himself needing all his new-found skills as he and Halt set off on a desperate mission to prevent the assassination of the King.

An action packed series that keeps you coming back for more. With at least 9 books planned John Flanagan will keep you entertained for weeks on end.
I give “The Rangers Apprentice” 4 ½ out of 5 for its gripping action.
